(english version below) In seiner Ausstellung L O T • [lɔt] • [loːt] bedient sich Thomas Ulm eines polyglotten Homographs und verknüpft vor dem Hintergrund des berühmten Hegel-Zitats, 'Der Weg des Geistes ist die Vermittlung, der Umweg', geografische Motive eines Flusses im Südwesten Frankreichs mit der geometrischen Konstruktion einer Senkrechten (des Lots).

Wichtig in Ulms künstlerischem Prozess ist der Aspekt der Vermittlung. Oft wählt er dafür als Ausgangspunkt alltägliche Phänomene, deren vertraute Bedeutungen so verschoben werden, dass sich im Hin und Her zwischen Denotation und Konnotation Bedeutungsebenen erweitern und zeigen. Diesem abstrakt und streng klingenden Vorgehen stellt Ulm gerne Spielerisches, ja Schwärmerisches zur Seite, und Humor.

Thomas Ulm

In the exhibition L O T • [lɔt] • [loːt] Thomas Ulm makes use of an interlingual homograph and, against the background of Hegel’s famous quotation, ‘The way of spirit is mediation, detour’, he connects the geographic features of a river in south-west France (the Lot) with the geometric construction of a perpendicular, as made by a plumb bob (in German, a ‘Lot’).

The aspect of mediation is central to Ulm’s artistic process. He often takes as a starting point everyday phenomena whose familiar meanings are shifted to such an extent that, in the back and forth between denotation and connotation, levels of meaning are revealed and expanded. Within this abstract and rigorous-sounding approach, Ulm likes to present the playful, even lyrical, and humorous.
